My semester project is going to be on the math behind kaleidoscopes. Kaleidoscopes have optical properties and patterns that is only made possible by mathmatics. The patterens are created by repeated reflections of light in mirrors. Different geometries result from symmetry in the patterns emerging from repeated mathematical transformations including reflection, rotation, translation, scaling, and pattern tiling. I will explore and explain the mathmentical processes behind theses patterns.
